5 Tips for Staying Cool During Summer

A hot and miserable home can take the fun right out of summer and living in Myrtle Beach your air conditioner works hard and long because the heat and humidity can be oppressing on your HVAC unit.

Your AC unit doesn’t need to be the only tool in your arsenal to keep your home cooler. In order to minimize your energy usage and keep the thermostat set at a level where your unit can stay consistent with your temperature and comfort level, here are 5 tips for staying cool this summer.

  • Keep your blinds closed and curtains drawn. Sorry light lovers, but keeping it dark will really help keep your home cool. Did you know that 30% of the heat that comes into your home is because of the sun pouring in through the window? Sun blocking curtains have become very popular in the last 3-4 years. according to the Huffington Post. If you close the blinds in your home, it can save you money on your monthly electric bill, as well as lower the temperature by up to 20 degrees.
  • Set your ceiling fans to rotate counter-clockwise. Did you know changing the rotation of your ceiling fan seasonally can help the temperature flow. If you set it to rotate counter-clockwise in the summer at a high speed, it will create a cool downward airflow and push the cool air down to the floor, according to Delmar Fans. Obviously the opposite holds true in the winter.
  • Avoid cooking indoors. Now of course this does not mean do not cook anything as we would not want you to starve, however instead of using the oven try to use the stovetop or microwave inside. An outside grill can be your best friend instead of using the oven. An oven set on 350-450 can raise the temperature in your home by 5-7 degrees or more depending on how long your oven is on and how big your home is.
  • Fans, fans, and yes, more fans. Fans are a cheap way to cool down inside, along with helping circulate the air so it does not feel stagnant and stale. One neat trick is to get a bowl of rice and put some ice (or ice packs for less mess) in front of the fan. A very light cool mist of air will blow out and feels amazing.  Avoid using too many bowls as you do not want to put too much moisture in the air.

I hope these 5 quick tips help you stay cool and comfortable this summer. And as always, “stay cool to infinity.”
